Mark Brown began training in self-defense systems in 2009 after receiving a degree in Criminal Justice from Marist College. He is currently an IT Systems Manager at DEPCOM Power Inc. a Utility Scale Solar Engineering, Procurement, and Construction company where he has been for the last 5 years. Mark started training in Krav Maga under Jason Summers at his school, Self Defense NJ. Jason transferred his extensive knowledge of Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do and, Nagasu-Ryu Jujitsu which he holds the rank of 5th degree black belt to Mark. Mark attained the rank of Brown belt while training with Jason becoming an assistant trainer in his Krav Maga program.
Looking to further his knowledge Mark sought out Jason’s mentor Wayne “Papasan” Ford for instruction in Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu. Master Ford a 10th degree black and founder of Nagasu Ryu Jujistu, taught a small group of people, of which Mark was honored to be a part of. Mark would meet with Papasan at the gym and anywhere he could to learn from his 40+ years of experience which primarily focused on self-defense. Nagasu Ryu focusing on the combative and self defense methodology of jujitsu rather than sport fighting aspects. Under Master Fords instruction Mark attained the rank of Black Belt in Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu.
Mark does not focus on competitive, sport or traditional martial arts. He will study any style and take from it anything that would be useful to self-defense scenarios. The belief is that you should not have to rely on size or strength to “win”/survive a violent altercation. His goal is to teach you the principles and techniques for street survival as well as personal and third party protection.
Mark continues to broaden his skill base with Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu that he practices regularly.
Unlike many martial artists, who have lifelong training experience of their arts. I started my Sanda training in college simply because I was fed up of being picked on and bullied at school. Back then I was a 250lbs chubby nerdy college kid, and I never thought that one day I could be representing the USA and compete at the World Championship as a Sanda athlete. Truth to be told, how I see it is that through hard work and training, if I can do it, everyone can do it.
But make no mistakes, winning medals or titles, not necessarily make someone a martial artist. Of course, such achievements demonstrate your skills and knowledge of a certain art, but to be a martial artist it requires a lot more than just technical skills.
In the years of martial arts training, by witnessing the rise and fall from the Karate Kid to the UFC. More and more I realize that nowadays we made more fighters than ever, but much less martial artists. Why? Because many of the core value of being a martial artist is being lost during that process. This is also the main reason that drives me to the decision of my coaching career in Sanda in hope of restoring the core values like Respect, Responsibility, Discipline and Integrity back in to the martial arts training.
